Ethnonationalist movements have gained ground over the past decade in the U.S., Europe, India, and elsewhere. What is the appeal of ethnonationalism and where does it go wrong? On some views, the ethnonationalist’s mistake lies in ignorance: he takes identity to be established by some essential core, and the solution lies in education in history and racial genetics, allowing him to see that his essentialism rests on error. While this response is helpful to a point, I propose that the essentialism (...) that drives ethnonationalism is itself a project, founded on the need for meaning, and that the mistake lies not primarily in understanding the basis of identities, but in understanding how meaning is possible for us. In Part 1, I distinguish between the different kinds of reasons that might be called “reasons of identity” and argue that only some of them properly fall under that label. While identities can sometimes provide reasons for action, at other times they function by reinforcing reasons that have other sources, including a recognition of freedom. In Part 2 I develop an account of a core aspect of identity: identification. Here I argue that our identities are constituted by the acceptance of projects aimed at satisfying our need for meaning in life, and that projects aimed at freedom are best suited to that need. In Part 3, I demonstrate that the projects at the core of ethnonationalism prioritize reasons of identity over reasons of freedom. Because identities are products of freedom, they are unstable; in order to draw on them as a source of normativity, the ethnonationalist aims to provide them with stability by insulating them from others. But in so doing, the ethnonationalist undermines his ability to find meaning. (shrink)

This study examines the impact of board of director gender diversity on corporate tax aggressiveness. Based on a sample of 418 U.S. firms covering the 2006–2009 period, our ordinary least squares regression results show a negative and statistically significant association between female representation on the board and tax aggressiveness after controlling for endogeneity. Our results are consistent across several measures of tax aggressiveness and additional robustness checks.

Es un hecho natural que la vida no puede ser suspendida, al contrario de los juicios. Admitimos que tenemos que decidir en la vida, y que nos movemos o tenemos impulsos hacia las cosas. Por ello, actuamos de una manera o de otra, sirviéndonos y prestando cierta validez a impresiones de nuestros sentidos, frente a otras que no nos merecen confianza. Esto es lo que quiere decir Sexto, cuando advierte que el escéptico tiene un criterio no para distinguir lo verdadero (...) de lo falso, sino para conducirse en la vida. En este artículo queremos defender que las diferencias entre los diversos tipos de filosofías, y hasta de escepticismos, se producen más en el plano gnoseológico que en el práctico. Es más, defendemos que, en la mayoría de las ocasiones, no actuamos con principios establecidos, actuamos con cierto escepticismo “socializado” que todos activamos, dejándonos convencer con los datos que tenemos, de manera relativa, asimilando que lo probable o lo plausible o lo razonable en cada situación decide que actuemos en una dirección u otra, y todo presidido por lo que se nos aparece, por el fenómeno. Teksty są co najmniej w dwójnasób transcendentne. Z jednej strony poprzez język, tworzywo tekstu, który konstytuując się w diachronii i funkcjonując w synchronii, transcenduje – żeby użyć sformułowania Karla Jaspersa – przeszłą rzeczywistość w postaci powstałych wtedy znaków i ich znaczeń w nieznaną z tamtej perspektywy przyszłość, a więc i w naszą teraźniejszość. Z drugiej zaś istniejące już teksty wchodzą z sobą w interakcję, co powoduje, że tworzą się niejako hiperteksty w czasie i w przestrzeni. Jest jeszcze i trzeci wymiar (...) – to autor tekstu i czytelnik, którym tekst pozwala – jak mówi Gerhard Kurz – wyjść „poza siebie”, bo tylko wtedy odczuwamy potrzebę powrotu do „własnego ja”, odrzucając po drodze kolejną maskę. W artykule pokazano to na przykładzie tekstów Franza Kafki. Spośród wielu poruszonych tam wątków ograniczmy się tutaj jedynie do toposu syren, które zniewalały żeglarzy swym śpiewem. U Kafki syreny już definitywnie nie śpiewają, wobec czego Odyseusz niepotrzebnie kazał zatykać sobie uszy woskiem. Kafka stawia tylko kropkę nad i, bo już i we wcześniejszej literaturze niemieckiej ten śpiew cichł coraz bardziej. I tak w znanej pieśni Heinego Loreley poeta już nie jest pewny skuteczności śpiewu syren – on jedynie chce w to wierzyć: „Wierzę, że fale w końcu pochłoną i żeglarza i łódź”. Bo w czasach nihilizmu śpiew – i sztuka w ogóle – traci swą moc. W balladzie Rybak Goethego syrena wprawdzie jeszcze tryumfuje, ale to nie za sprawą śpiewu. Śpiew bowiem dominuje w drugiej zwrotce, natomiast rybak pogrąża się w odmętach morza dopiero w czwartej zwrotce, gdzie dominuje perswazja słowna. Ta inwersja – notabene brak jej w polskim tłumaczeniu Hanny Januszewskiej w Dziełach wybranych J. W. Goethego – nie mogła być u Goethego przypadkowa: symbolizuje ona typową dla lustrzanego odbicia odwróconą proporcję – rybak tak naprawdę ujrzał własne odbicie w wodzie, biorąc je za postać syreny. Śmierć w odmętach morza była ceną za brak samowiedzy. Nie darmo zatem napis na świątyni Apollina w Delfach głosił: „Γνῶθι σεαυτόν – Poznaj samego siebie”. (shrink)

Drawing on Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of double-voicedness and James Scott’s theory of public and hidden transcripts, this essay investigates the colonial context of Romans 13:1–7 with particular attention to the Roman imperial cult. It is my contention that Paul attempts to persuade the audience to resist the imperial cult, whilst negotiating colonial power and authority. It is assumed that colonial discourse is, by nature, a double-voiced discourse in that the public transcript of the dominant and the hidden transcript of (...) the suppressed coexist in a continued state of internal tension and conflict. Seen in this light, Paul as a colonised subject parodies the public transcript of the elites in his own hidden transcript. However, Paul’s doubled-voiced discourse finally turns out to be subversive against the dominant culture by suggesting that ultimate honour, fear, and authority should not be due to the rulers of the Roman Empire but to God. Dieses Buch ist eine Sammlung der erstmalig publizierten Mitschriften Roman Witold Ingardens von den Vorlesungen über die Phänomenologische Interpretation von Kants Kritik der reinen Vernunft, die von Martin Heidegger im Wintersemester 1927/28 in Marburg gehalten wurden. Die Mitschriften wurden von den Herausgebern dieses Bandes während einer Recherche im Familienarchiv von Roman Witold Ingarden in Krakau entdeckt, abgeschrieben und anschließend wissenschaftlich bearbeitet.

This book studies the history of intercultural human rights. It examines the foundational elements of human rights in the East and the West and provides a comparative analysis of the independent streams of thought originating from the two different geographic spaces. It traces the genesis of the idea of human rights back to ancient Indian and Greco-Roman texts, especially concepts such as the Rigvedic universal moral law, the Upanishadic narratives, the Romans' model of governance, the rule of law, and (...) administration of justice. It also looks at Cicero's concept of rights and duties which focuses on quality of compassion and fair play, and Seneca's expositions on mercy, empathy, justice and checks on the arbitrary exercise of power. An important contribution, this book fills a significant gap in the study of human rights. Recent research suggests that philanthropy’s value to the firm is largely mediated by contextual factors such as managers’ assumed motives for charity. Our article extends this contingency perspective using a “sensegiving” lens, by which external actors’ interpretations of organizational actions may be influenced by the way in which the organization communicates about those actions. We consider how sensegiving features in philanthropy-related press releases affect whether investors value those donation decisions. For the empirical investigation in this study, we analyze abnormal returns (...) to announcements by U.S. Fortune 500 firms documenting their donations to Hurricane Katrina disaster relief in 2005. We expect that in general, donation decisions would be controversial given the uncertainty surrounding the hurricane’s economic effects at the time. However, we also propose that announcements emphasizing employee involvement in the donation send investors positive signals about the firm’s ability to bounce back from the disaster’s adverse effects. We find empirical support for the proposed hypotheses, and discuss the implications for theory and practice. (shrink)

Until 1977, Monsignor Romero was a traditional Catholic bishop trained in traditional Roman theology with a penchant for order and non-involvement in 'politics'. He was also a product of the 1968 Medellin Conference which fashioned a pastoral model for the Latin American church: 'A fundamental option for the poor' on the thrust of the Second Vatican Council. This article seeks to present Oscar Romero within a historical context and proposes him as a servant-leader model for African church leaders, especially (...) Catholic bishops. (shrink)

Refusant la dichotomie saussurienne langue / parole, qui vide la pratique linguistique de sa substance, il affirme la nature sociale du signe et pose les fondements dʹune linguistique de lʹénonciation en tant que manifestation sociale et non individuelle. Au signe figé, réduit à nʹêtre quʹun "signal", il oppose le signe mouvant, changeant, arène où (...) se jouent les conflits sociaux. Obwohl Gesundheit für alle Menschen essentiell ist, unterliegt das Verständnis des Begriffs »Gesundheit« jeweils historisch, regional und kulturell unterschiedlichen Einflüssen. Mit verschiedenen Festlegungen von »Gesundheit und Krankheit« werden auch die Aufgaben der Medizin unterschiedlich definiert. Dieser Band ist dem Thema »Verständnis von Gesundheit« gewidmet, einem der Kernthemen der interdisziplinären Arbeitsgruppe der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften »Zukunft der Medizin: Gesundheit für alle«. Es wird u.a. der Frage nachgegangen, wie die Medizin Krankheiten nicht nur immer besser therapieren kann, sondern wie sie außerdem (...) besser imstande sein könnte, Gesundheit zu bewahren. Die Vielfalt der mittelalterlichen Epik bietet ein fruchtbares Feld für gattungstheoretische Bestimmungen, das bislang in keiner Hinsicht ausgeschöpft ist. Da die mittelalterlichen Poetiken Gattungszuordnungen nicht zwingend festschreiben, bietet sich die Möglichkeit, auf der Basis einer induktiven Poetik mittelalterliche Werke in ihren generischen Verwandschaftsverhältnissen neu zu bestimmen. Entgegen dem Trend der älteren Forschung, Beschreibungspassagen in der mittelalterlichen Erzählliteratur eher negativ zu bewerten, soll in dem vorliegenden Beitrag die Bedeutung der Ekphrasis für Gattungsbestimmungen mittelalterlicher Erzähltexte herausgearbeitet und mit dem Begriff des „ekphrastischen (...) Romans“ ein neuer, auch die Antike und die Neuzeit umfassender Gattungstypus kreiert werden. Wer sich zünftig vorwiegend mit der modernen Literatur befasst, weiß um die gattungsbildende Funktion der Beschreibung im neoavantgardistischen Nouveau Roman, doch ist die generische Relevanz von ekphrastischen Passagen im mittelalterlichen Versroman noch weithin unerforscht und den Mediävisten unbekannt. Dass gerade der Beschreibung von Kunstwerken, auf die in letzter Zeit immer mehr der Begriff der Ekphrasis eingeschränkt wird, eine große poetische Relevanz zukommt, dokumentiert nicht nur ihre häufige Positionierung am Werkeingang oder ihre motivische Verknüpfung mit Passageriten des Protagonisten, sondern auch ihre besondere digressive Stellung im Erzählkontinuum mit komplexen Rahmen- und Binnenstrukturen, vor allem aber ihre für das ganze Werk repräsentative und quasi gattungsgenerierende Funktion als mise en abyme. Zudem sind die Beschreibungen von Kunstwerken in der Erzählliteratur des Hochmittelalters Zeichen einer neuen materiellen Sachkultur sowie symbolisch-diagrammatische Spiegelungen zeitgenössischer Weltbilder. Durch Partizipation an Formen der Visualität und Intermedialität sind die Ekphrasen auch mediengeschichtlich attraktiv und fungieren außerdem als Vehikel nicht nur einer werkimmanenten Poetik, sondern auch einer intrinsischen, Kunst wie auch Technik umgreifenden und universellen Ästhetik. Das hier rekonstruierte Genos des „ekphrastischen Romans“, das sich bis auf Homers,Ilias' zurückverfolgen lässt, die mit der Beschreibung von Achills Schild einen Prototypen liefert, zeigt bei aller Kontinuität einen besonderen Schub im Hochmittelalter, der neben byzantinischen Einflüssen u. a. mit einer ausgebildeten Exkurstheorie sowie Innovationen in der Erzähltechnik zusammenhängt, wie man z. B. aus dem,Erec' Hartmanns von Aue ersehen kann. Der „ekphrastische Roman“ zielt nicht auf einen nur an Aktionen interessierten Leser ab, der im Extremfall Haltepunkte im Erzählfluss überspringt, sondern auf einen Rezipienten, der sich geduldig mit der Dekodierung imaginärer Bildwelten befasst und bereit ist, sich in poetologische und kunstästhetische Reflexionen zu vertiefen, die eine eigene Ebene der Werkdeutung konstituieren. While Hermann Levin Goldschmidt didn’t read Yiddish anarchists, there seems to have been a convergent evolution in their thinking. Goldschmidt’s looking up to Jewish lore as a source of liberating creativity is commonly encountered in Yiddish anarchist texts. His view of action as a constant response to internal and external challenges in the struggle for an open future is developed by Isaac Nachman Steinberg on the basis of nineteenth-century vitalism. Goldschmidt’s theory of anarchist individualism as willed self-limiting solidarity has a (...) compelling parallel in Hillel Solotaroff’s view of history. His use of impressionism and photography to eternalize the immediacy of human actuality is akin to Rudolf Rocker’s championing of decadent literature. In both cases, the goal of anarchism is not a dictatorship of the former downtrodden, but a continuous and contradictory evolution of freedom in ever-changing contexts. (shrink)

Najnovija enciklika pape Benedikta XVI Caritas in veritate, kao i prethodne enciklike posvećene socijalnoj tematici, najreprezentativniji su dio opusa katoličkog socijalnog nauka koji u svijetlu judeo-kršćanske Objave i općih načela kršćanske filozofije raščlanjuje aktualne svjetske društvene prilike.U članku se razložila prožetost socijalnog nauka Crkve filozofijom te ukazalo na metafizičke specifičnosti te filozofije, koja sačinjava, kako se je pokazalo, filozofski okvir enciklike Caritas in veritate. Analizom logike filozofskog diskursa Benedikta XVI koja inkorporira, u taj filozofski okvir, načelo besplatnosti kao izraz ljudskog (...) bratstva, nastojalo se ukazati na doprinos enciklike Caritas in veritate aktualnim promišljanjima filozofije globalizacije.The latest encyclical letter by the Pope Benedict XVI Caritas in veritate, similar to the former encyclicals dedicated to social issues, is the most representative part of the Catholic social teaching which analyses current world issues in the light of Judeo-Christian Revelation and general principles of Christian philosophy.This article has expounded the philosophical background of Roman Catholic social teaching and indicated metaphysical peculiarities of that philosophy which builds, as it is shown, the philosophical foundation of the encyclical Caritas in veritate. By analyzing the logic of Benedict’s philosophical discourse, which in that philosophical frame includes the principle of gratuitousness as the expression of human fraternity, we tried to show the contribution of Caritas in veritate encyclical letter to current philosophical thought about globalization. Autorova je namjera da u ovom članku tematizira Augustinovu kritiku rimskih vrlina slijedeći uvide iz njegovog voluminoznog teksta O državi Božjoj. Augustinove uvide i zaključke o praksama Imperija povezat ću s kritikom Hardtovog i Negrijevog tumačenja globalnog neo-republikanskog Imperija. U oba slučaja vrline Imperija kulminiraju u različitim oblicima terora kojima je jedini cilj povećanje kapitala. Promišljajući o kapitalu i teroru kao o imperijalnim, autor će ponuditi teološku kritiku ta dva teksta. Pri kraju članka, autor će pokušati konstruirati stanovitu teo-političku sintezu (...) koja bi ponudila modele otpora vrlinama Imperija. Takav model otpora Imperijalnim praksama nužno mora sadržavati militantne oblike askeze.Author’s intention in this article is to reflect about St. Augustine critics of Roman virtues in fifth book of his voluminous text City of God. Augustine’s insights and conclusions on Imperial practice author will connect with specific critics of Hardt’s and Negri’s interpretations of global neo-republican Empire. In both cases virtues of Empire culminate in different form of terror with one intention to produce and expend more capital. Once again author will reflect on imperial virtues and offer theological critique of these two texts. At the end of the article author will construct specific theopolitical synthesis and model of resistance to Empire. This resistance to imperial practices necessarily must content militant forms of ascetics. (shrink)
